Atlanta police chief “Erika Shields” resigns over Rayshard Brooks Murder
Rayshard Brooks, a 27 year old black man, was shot by an Atlanta police officer during a struggle at wendy’s drive-thru on Friday.
The next day, Saturday, protesters set fire to the Wendy’s restaurant where the shooting took palce. following this incident, Atlanta police chief Erika Shields handed in her resignation. The police officers involved in the murder have been identified as Devin Bronsan and Garrett Rolfe.
Atlanta is also one of many cities in the United States where the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer “Derek Chauvin” sparked protests.
George Floyd, who is also a black man, died after police officer “Derek Chauvin” a white man, knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes in total. Mr Floyd’s death has generated a worldwide anger against racism and police brutality in recent times.
One of the Atlanta police officers involved in the latest shooting, Garrett Rolfe, has been sacked, and the other, Devin Bronsan, put on administrative duty.
Erika Shields served as Atlanta police chief since December 2016. Erika’s resignation was announced by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said this in a statement:
“Because of her desire that Atlanta be a model of what meaningful reform should look like across this country, Chief Shields has offered to immediately step aside as police chief so that the city may move forward with urgency and rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our communities.”
